Kerelaw employee to sue over claims

A social worker worker is suing his former bosses for £100,000 claiming he was smeared by cover-up allegations at a secure unit for troubled kids. Andrew Walker, 64, worked at Kerelaw Residential Unit in Stevenson, Ayrshire, which was shut in 2006 following a police probe. Two workers were jailed for abusing kids while a three-year investigation by operators Glasgow City Council found 40 staff abused kids and others failed to stop it. Jailed Largs man Matt George will have to endure many weeks of waiting to hear the outcome of his appeal. Jailed Largs man Matt George has commenced his make-or-break appeal at the High Court in Edinburgh. Last Tuesday, the former teacher of Kerelaw Residential School in Stevenston began his bid for freedom after years of protesting his innocence. Back in 2006, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for physical and sexual abuses against pupils, but now hopes to show the court new evidence that will allow him to permanently return to family life in Rosebank Gardens, Largs. Support for Matt George in Scotland and for other wrongly accused staff from Kerelaw continues to grow with another letter of support published in the Largs and Millport Weekly news. A FACT  spokesman said this is not surprising given the overwhelming evidence that the staff at Kerelaw did exceptionally well in very difficult circumstances and with very limited resources or support from Glasgow Council Mr Hepburn’s letter, published on the 10th March, should serve as a warning to all staff working with difficult children that they should not expect their employers to act fairly or with any real understanding of the difficult ...Full Story
