ACPO: Abuse in Childrens’ Homes Widespread
Tony Butler, the Chief Constable of Gloucestershire and spokesman on abuse issues for chief police officers [ACPO], said: "In the past social workers and police officers simply didn't believe the children. We didn't think that short of thing went on in children's homes. With Beck's trial it became painfully clear that they could and did go on in children's homes." Welsh child sex abuse investigation grows
More than 60 detectives are now involved in Operation Goldfinch, the investigation into allegations of abuse in children's homes across south Wales. Several hundred former residents of about 50 homes, many of which have since closed, are being interviewed by police. The inquiry is expected to last at least another year. Most of the allegations relate to the 1970s and 1980s and so far 13 people, mostly former care workers, have been arrested and some have been charged. Detective chief inspector Gareth Tinnuche, who heads the inquiry, said: "We anticipate investigating more allegations of abuse and that Operation Goldfinch will continue throughout 1999. "The operation had its roots in an inquiry into the former Taff Vale children's home in Cardiff. West Dudley MBC following up allegations of historical abuse
Dudley Council is today, Monday 21st February 2000, following up an allegation made by a local Brierley Hill man that he was subjected to sexual abuse whilst living at Saltwells House approximately 20 years ago. This allegation came to light following an article in the Express and Star, Friday 18th February 2000, in which it was reported that the Greater Manchester Police were extending their enquiries to the West Midlands area as part of 'Operation Cleopatra'. Dick Colligan, Dudley Council 's Chief Education Officer, said: "The Council is extending full co-operation to the Police in the conduct of this historical enquiry and the more recent allegation. I would like to re-assure all concerned that these allegation do not involve any staff or young people currently at Saltwells House. Safeguards are in place to ensure that good practice operates in accordance with national guidelines. This includes encouraging young people to raise any concerns that they might have at any time."
