HARMAN REJECTS ANONYMITY FOR THOSE ACCUSED OF SEX CRIMES

June 30, 2004

The Solicitor General has poured cold water on demands for people accused of sex crimes to be given anonymity.Harriet Harman said in the interests of justice all criminal suspects would have to remain secret. Otherwise, it would make it appear as if sex crime victims were more likely to lie, she added.”You can’t have a situation where the system says that if it’s a rape complaint, it’s more likely to be false,” she added. “There is no evidence to support that.”
